Gelatin. Our grandma’s knew how to get it. They made their own bone broth (my recipe) and they added gelatin to their foods. Today I am going to show you an easy and delicious way to incorporate gelatin into your family’s daily routine: Homemade Pomegranate Gelatin Gummies! But first, some education about gelatin.

Gelatin is the cooked form of collagen…you know that stuff that doctors fill your face with to make you look younger and more supple? Well, I am here to tell you that you don’t need to spend that much money or go through painful injections because consuming gelatin in your diet will do the trick! Gelatin is not only an amazing wrinkle preventative, it’s also a wonderful supplement for joints, promotes hair and nail growth, and is great for digestion.

Our ancestors ate a diet rich in collagen and gelatin because back in the day nothing was wasted and people made broth out of leftover chicken and beef bones and drank that broth or used it for soups. Our modern diets are sorely lacking in these essential nutrients!

The good news is, gelatin is making a comeback. NYC has broth kiosks now. Instead of picking up a cup of Joe, some New Yorkers are opting to pick up a cup of gelatin rich broth, no lie! And cafes across the country are also offering a savory cup of broth with meals. And more and more people are making their own bone broth (my recipe) and experiencing the health benefits!

Others ways to incorporate gelatin in your diet:

If making your own beef or chicken stock just isn’t something you are into, there are other ways to get gelatin into your daily routine. Adding a scoop of gelatin to your morning oatmeal, smoothie, coffee or tea is is an easy alternative. You can even add a couple of scoops to baked goods. If you have an egg allergy, gelatin is a fabulous egg substitute.

Of course kids don’t really consume hot drinks and aren’t always receptive to drinking broth, but you know what they love? Gummies! And you can make them yourself in just a few minutes. These taste and feel like “Jello” without the high sugar content, artificial colors, flavors and additives. Making your own “Jello” gummies is a cinch and you only need four ingredients: water, raw honey, pomegranate syrup and gelatin. By the way, your kids won’t be the only ones that love these, you will find yourself walking by the fridge and popping one or two in your mouth as well!

 Pomegranate Syrup

The Pomegranate syrup (link below) used in this recipe is super high in antioxidants and is generally used as a supplement in smoothies or straight off the spoon. You can also pour it in a glass with sparkling ice water for a refreshing bubbly drink! It makes for a delicious, vitamin rich gummy. I get mine at Whole Food’s Market and have provided a link below to order from Amazon, but if you would rather make your own simply simmer 1 cup pomegranate juice in a sauce pan until it reduces to 1/2 cup. Allow to cool and use in any of the ways I mentioned above or in this recipe.

You can pour your prepared pomegranate gelatin into a baking dish just like you do with Jello and when solid, cut into squares, or you can use candy molds to create fun shapes, like these hearts.
