By now most coffee drinkers have heard about the magical effects of bulletproofing coffee: more energy, better mental acuity, less belly fat, happier digestion and better skin (to name just a few!) What is ‘Bulletproofing’ and What are The Benefits?
‘Bulletproofing’ coffee simply means that you add a couple of ingredients to your coffee that are high in healthy medium chain triglycerides (MCT’s)…in other words, ‘fats’. Medium chain fats are easily digestible and supply the brain with what it needs for better mental acuity. These fats can also give you more energy, balance hormones, improve thyroid function, and maximize your fat burning capabilities! Healthy fats can also give you the feeling of being full, which is great because you may just end up eating less. To ‘bulletproof’ coffee most people add a little grass fed butter or ghee and a quality source of MCT’s like Bulletproof’s Brain Octane Oil.
Get More Bang for Your Buck By Adding Belly Healing Collagen or Gelatin!
And for additional belly and skin benefits some people add a grass fed gelatin or collagen to their morning brew, smoothie or tea! Both the gelatin powder and Bulletproof Oil are flavorless and odorless so no worries about taste! These ingredients are not only great for your body, your brain and your belly but they also make for the richest, most flavorful and delicious cup of coffee ever. But again, what if you, like me, don’t drink coffee?
Criobru: Honest Energy Coffee Alternative
Crio Bru is a delicious, healthy alternative to coffee made from ground cocoa beans. Like coffee, the grounds are brewed or steeped resulting in a delicious drink. The natural energy boost you get with a cup of Crio Bru comes without the discomfort or or jitters you may experience with caffeine. This delicious coffee alternative is made with 100% Fair Trade cacao beans, roasted and ground using a proprietary process that preserves many of it’s plentiful health benefits.
Contrary to what some people believe, cocoa contains little to no caffeine; instead it has theobromine, a natural and gentle stimulant relative to caffeine. Unlike caffeine – which is harsh causing a spike and then a crash – theobromine works with your body, not against it, giving you a mild, long-lasting lift without making you feel nervous or jittery.
Criobru: Boosts Your Immune System and Promotes Weight Loss:
Low in calories and carbs – and with theobromine as a natural appetite suppressant – cacao is the superfood that helps curb your appetite while promoting weight loss and healthy living.
Rich in Magnesium and Other Minerals
Cacao has high levels of magnesium, zinc, and other minerals supporting the heart, aiding digestion, building strong bones and healthy blood.
Supports Body and Brain Chemistry
Cacao is abundant in chemicals produced by the body but rarely found in most foods:
- Anadamide, an endorphin or “bliss chemical” produced after exercise
- Phenylethylamine for increased focus and alertness
- Serotonin, a primary neurotransmitter that helps build a “stress defense shield”
- Tryptophan, an amino acid that enhances relaxation and promotes better sleep
My Favorite Flavor and How I Bullet Proof My Crio Bru:
My favorite flavor of Crio Bru is Dominican Republic. Like coffee beans, cocoa beans have a variety of flavors depending on where they are grown, and like coffee beans they are a little bitter. I happen to be a dark chocolate lover, so I add some homemade date sweetened almond milk for a creamy slightly sweet bru. If you prefer you can try adding a few drops of liquid Stevia. Stevia is a natural, low glycemic, calorie free way to sweeten your brew without harmful effects of sugar or artificial sweeteners. Of course you can always use honey or maple syrup. And as mentioned above, some people add a spoonful of grass fed gelatin for even more belly and skin benefits.
More Ways to “Bulletproof”
You can bullet proof tea, or if hot drinks aren’t your thing you can also get the benefits of using Bulletproof’s Brain Octane Oil by adding it to smoothies and salad dressings!
My Crio-Brew Recipe:

- 1 tablespoon brain octane oil link above Start with 1 teaspoon and work your way up to a tablespoon over a few weeks

Make coffee or crio bru the way you always do.

I would love to try that crio bru! Looks interesting! I bulletproof every morning but I don’t like to have coffee late in the day so that crio bru would be perfect! It is such a great way to get some fat in so you don’t snack!
Exactly!
I am a coffee-aholic – but I’ve never heard of bulletproofing before. But I’m totally down with cacao. I’ll be on the lookout for this.
You haven’t! Well now you have 🙂
Yes! Love when I incorporate bulletproof coffees into my morning routine!
This is quite interesting, as I’m not a coffee drinker so I will have to look into it.
Thanks Diana!
I add raw cocoa powder and coconut milk to my coffee every morning 🙂 I’ve heard of “brews” made from cocoa beans, but have never bought one!
For the non coffee drinker they are a great alternative!
Every day I bulletproof my coffee & add Great Lakes gelatin. I will never ever go back to artifical sweeteners. Thanks for the tip on Crio! I will buy some and try it out.
Yay for you! Artificial sweeteners are no bueno. I use a grass fed gelatin and love it.
You have just made my day. Chocolate brew sounds like a 100% better drink to me!
Lol I know you (like me) LOVE your chocolate!
I would love to try the crio bru since I don’t drink coffee! What a great alternative!
I think you would love it Emily.
Linda, thanks for sharing this wonderful way to consume more cacao and less coffee! I learned a lot about bulletproofing too. And it’s good for kids too, I guess!
True! I didn’t think of that!
I did not know that about cocao. Good info!
Linda, I’m not really a chocolate fan and can’t drink coffee. (The caffeine in coffee wrecks me, though for some reason, possibly genetic, I can drink pots and pots of strong black tea and not be affected.) But I’m going to tweet this for those who do like cocoa and coffee. I had seen the term “bulletproof coffee” before but never took the time to find out more about it until now. I’m all organic, so I had to read your post!
Well thanks for the retweet! I appreciate it so much!
I use foursigmatics mushroom coffee, 2 tbs cacao, 1 tbs ghee, 1 tbs MCT oil, cinnamon & turmeric then blend! I get the cacao & ghee at Thrive (their brand) as well as the mushroom coffee. So much energy & brain clarity. Thrive Market:

Have you tried Choffy? It sounds similar, but I haven’t tried either one. I’m going to give this a try, it sounds like a perfect breakfast for me.
I have not! I will have to google!
I am huge proponent of healthy eating. I do have a question of how palatable is mix of Curiosity Bru, ghee, gelatin and other additives. I am afraid that I might not be able to swallow it. Crio Bru alone will not be a problem but other ingredients make me nervous when it comes to taste. My question is how does it taste?
Good question and I should probably add this info to the post! Bulletproof and gelatin are both flavorless and odorless. The gelatin thickens up your brew a little, consider it like adding cream to coffee. The bulletproof isn’t noticeable except your lips get a good conditioning! Seriously, no need for chapstick! As far as grassfed butter or ghee, that adds a little flavor but it’s good flavor! And if you aren’t a fan of bitter add a couple drops of Stevia. It’s delicious!
is the ghee absolutley necessary as even the smell of it makes me gag, can i still get some benefits of coffee with MCT oil minus the ghee.
No it’s not necessary! If you don’t have the same problem with grass fed butter you can use that or just stick to the MCT oil!
It looks as though Crio Bru is no longer making their Dominican Republic blend. Have you tried the other flavors? How would you rank the others, if so? I am seeing Ecuador, Ghana French, and Ghana Light. Any advise?
Love the post, by the way! I need to cut caffeine but I love healthy fats in my coffee, so I am looking forward to trying this.
They stopped making it? I just bought three packs! Dang it. I have tried Ghana and Ecuador and both were fine, I just liked Dominican Republic the best.
Well I saw there are a couple left on Amazon, but then I checked their website (where it looks to be cheaper) and the DR blend is not on there. Maybe it is seasonal or something?? Who knows. Sorry to have to relay the bad news!!
No worries. I did get mine on Amazon.
I just wanted to share that Crio Bru is having a really good Easter sale on their website right now!! I’ve been hooked on this for a while now. So thankful for this post for introducing me!
Oh thanks! I will definitely check it out!
I just cut out caffeine from my diet and after going through all the headache withdraws, I am feeling better than ever. So excited to find this alternative as I have been looking EVERYWHERE for an option to mix with Brain Octane oil, without using caffeine, yet still healthy. Thank you for sharing!
I still love it after all this time and now add homemade date sweetened almond milk. It’s dreamy!
